Role purpose
We are looking for a university student intern to undertake a supervised software engineering placement towards building practical, employable skills. The Intern will contribute to real project work under close mentorship while following a structured training plan, gaining experience of professional development practice across the full stack, DevOps, Cloud, Large Language Models, and A.I development.
Working within a small and focused team, you'll have the opportunity to specialise in front-end or back-end, or progress as a full-stack developer. There may also be an opportunity to contribute to our upcoming product, Terraforma EHR — a connected-healthcare framework and electronic health record with real-time knowledge discovery for predictive clinical decision-making.
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to software development tasks across the company's projects under supervision.
- Write, test and debug code, and take part in code review.
- Use version control and issue tracking as part of the team workflow.
- Progress from guided exercises to owning small, well-defined features.
- Develop API and UI backend features (Java, Spring Boot, Vue.js, SQL, PostgreSQL database, AWS).
- Participate in team review meetings, daily scrum and agile planning sessions.
- Keep simple records of work done to support learning and assessment.
Learning & development outcomes
- Apply core development skills (coding, testing, debugging) in a professional setting.
- Use industry-standard tooling — version control, code review, CI/CD — competently.
- Understand and contribute to a full-stack and DevOps / cloud workflow.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively within a development process.
- Reflect on and evidence your professional development for assessment and future applications.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled on a STEM undergraduate course requiring a placement.
- Basic programming knowledge and a genuine willingness to learn.
- Demonstrable interest in web development through hobbies or student projects.
- A self-starter mindset, ready to jump into working on complex problems.
- Reliable communication and the self-discipline to work remotely and onsite with support.
- Some familiarity with Java and/or JavaScript and databases.
- Any exposure to Git, or small personal / coursework projects.
Working arrangements
This is a hybrid placement with weekly one-to-one supervision and daily availability of the supervisor for questions and code review. Guidance and reasonable support with software and equipment will be provided, along with a home-working health-and-safety self-assessment at the start.
Skills & technologies
This job description accompanies the Internship Offer Letter and Placement Learning Agreement. The placement is unpaid on the basis that it is a required, assessed part of a UK higher-education course lasting under 12 months.
